The master’s track Statistical Science for the Life Sciences and Behavioural Sciences is organised jointly by groups at different institutes and universities:

  • Mathematical Institute, Leiden University
  • Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Leiden University
  • Department of Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics, Leiden University Medical Center
  • Department of Mathematics, VU University Amsterdam
  • Biometris – Applied Statistics, Wageningen University and Research centre

Together these institutes have expertise in a wide area of statistical science and its applications, both practical and theoretical. Many of the scientific staff members are involved in other educational tasks, or are specialised in research and statistical consultation.

Staff

In total, about 25 instructors of seven institutes participate in the programme. The scientific staff members are also involved in other educational tasks, or are specialised in research and statistical consultation.

Prof. Richard Gill

“This is the first-ever comprehensive master’s specialisation in applied statistics in the Netherlands.”

“The start-up of the first-ever comprehensive master’s programme in applied statistics in the Netherlands is an exciting moment. We head a multifaceted consortium of the best instructors and world-famous researchers in applied and theoretical statistics from faculties of Science
(including bio- and life-sciences), Medicine and psychology in Leiden and from neighbouring closely collaborating universities.

The steering committee further consists of Willem Heiser (Leiden University), Theo Stijnen (Leiden University), Aad van der Vaart (VU University Amsterdam), Fred van Eeuwijk (Wageningen University and Research Center) and Emmanuel Lesaffre (Erasmus University
Rotterdam). We are proud to have Willem R. van Zwet (Leiden University) and Jerome H. Friedman (Stanford University) as patrons of this new Statistical Science Master’s Programme in the Netherlands.
