In the specialisation in Political Culture and National Identities you will study the political culture and national identity of a number of European countries (between c. 1800-2010), viewed from an international perspective. This means that not only will you look at the history of the political culture and national identities of specific countries, such as the Netherlands, Great Britain, Germany or Russia, but you will also analyse how these countries are influenced from outside through the process of cultural transfer — in other words, the adaptation of foreign examples or the inspiration emanating from them. Since the study of the way national politics and identities are conceived is a new research area, students taking this specialisation will be at the forefront of this new approach.
Entry requirements
- A BA degree or its equivalent, with a relevant specialisation and excellent grades
- The prime requirement is for a proven affinity with and ability for scholarly research. This may be demonstrated, for example, by an average mark of at least 7.5, and a grade for the BA thesis of 8 or higher.
- All applicants need to enclose two letters of recommendation from academic staff members with their application.
- Proof of sufficient proficiency in English: IELTS test level of at least 6.5 or TOEFL score of at least 570/230/88-90, evidenced by an appropriate test.
This requirement does not apply if you have:- completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
- an International Baccalaureate, or
- a Dutch VWO-diploma
Applicants with a higher professional education (HBO) degree are not eligible for admission.
