The Politics, Society and Economy (PSE) specialisation is specifically intended for students interested in social science approaches to one or more countries or regions of modern or contemporary Asia, such as modern history, sociology, development economics, media studies, political science and international relations, and anthropology.
Expertise in Leiden on modern Asia covers all Asian regions: East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Central Asia.
The programme’s modular structure with elective courses in each of the two semesters and an individually supervised thesis allows students a considerable degree of freedom and individual specialisation by country, region, discipline or field. Within the PSE specialisation, knowledge of an Asian language is not required, but students have the option of taking an intensive modern language course at beginner’s level in Japanese, Indonesian, Chinese, Korean or Hindi.
