The objective of the Peace, Justice and Development specialisation is to provide students with advanced knowledge of, and skills in, various areas of public international law which attract considerable attention in international affairs and which are inter-related.

Career

The programme is specifically designed to provide students with advocacy and litigation skills necessary to pursue a career in the areas of peace and justice. It offers students from all over the world the opportunity to benefit from the unique environment of The Hague as host of international institutions. The programme provides a port of entry to internship and job opportunities with international organisations, international courts and tribunals, Defence teams and NGOs or in academia (PhD programmes).

Students become part of the international law and international justice community. Part of the success of the degree can be measured by the number of Leiden graduates who work in international criminal tribunals in The Hague and in international organisations and NGOs engaged in the practice of international law throughout the world:

“As an LL.M. Adv. graduate, it is wonderful to meet new generations of interns and professionals from Leiden at the Tribunal each year” (Thomas Wayde Pittman, Senior Legal Officer, ICTY)

“After my LL.M., I started to work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and was involved in ICJ proceedings” (Nino Tsereteli, LLM Adv 2007-2008)
