Choose Museum practices at Leiden University

  • Explore a range of issues in cultural politics and cultural theory within the context of modern museum practices.
  • Benefit from Leiden’s long-standing tradition in academia and museum work. Three large national museums (the National Museum of Antiquities, the Museum of National History, and the Museum of Ethnology) were founded in Leiden at the beginning of the 19th century.
  • Focus on current issues. Our courses are based on ongoing research projects. Many of these involve both researchers from Leiden university as well as from the Leiden museums.
  • Address ethical issues concerning ownership and mobility of collections and explore the politics of museums and collecting, which museums worldwide are increasingly involved in.
  • Enjoy the unique combination of practical experience and high-quality academic research that offers you a dynamic, contemporary environment in a 200-year tradition.
  • Work as an intern in a museum or institution as part of this specialisation. This will provide you with valuable hands-on experience and will expand your network.
