The MA specialisation in Ancient History offers a wide-ranging overview of the history of the Greek and Roman period, with a focus on the history of the mentality and social and economic history in the period 400 B.C. – 400 A.D.
You will cover an array of subjects, including:
- The complex history of the Roman Republic;
- Civic life in Italy, Asia Minor and Egypt;
- Graeco-Roman religion;
- The rise of Christianity.
Not only will you work with the staff of the ancient history department, you will also have the opportunity to co-operate with scholars active in other fields of History, or with those working in the related fields of Classics, Ancient Philosophy, Classical Archaeology, Religious Studies and Near Eastern Cultures. For those with an interest in the study of documentary texts, there is access to Greek inscriptions and you will be able to work alongside papyrologists at the Leiden Papyrological Institute.
Over the years, the programme has attracted students with a BA in history, classics, archaeology and several other disciplines , both from within and from outside Leiden
