The Literature specialisation distinguishes itself from other MA programmes in the Netherlands by its intense collaboration with the MA programmes in Media Studies and the Research Master’s specialisation in Art History ; this joint teaching programme gives you the opportunity to acquire a valuable range of skills, both disciplinary and interdisciplinary, historical and theoretical. Based on the premise that the study of cultural objects and cultural practices is founded on a shared theoretical and methodological framework, this programme includes the study of media, art and literature.

Programme

The first semester starts with the course Methodological Concepts in Art and Literature, that gives all students a shared methodological and theoretical basis. Parallel to this course you choose an interdisciplinary (period-bound) and a disciplinary course (in your field of specialisation).

Whereas the first semester presented the interdisciplinary framework of the whole programme, the second semester differentiates between the specificity of art history and literary studies by means of two courses, respectively: 1) Approaches to Literature, and 2) Practices and Debates in Art History. This semester also contains interdisciplinary courses, namely in the form of the period-bound elective. Parallel to this, the disciplinary specialisation is continued during this semester as well.

The third semester can be spent at a university abroad, used for an internship in an affiliated institution in Europe or the United States, or for an internship in a museum or art institution. You can also opt for choosing two electives (one from your period of specialisation and one from your discipline of specialisation), the colloquium, the thesis seminar, or combine your choice of seminars with a tutorial in consultation with an expert in your field of interest, and/or a more extensive practical component which is strongly affiliated with the direction of your research.

The fourth semester continues the thesis seminar and is largely filled by writing your Research Master’s thesis and preparations for the final exam.
