The specialisation in Judaism provides the opportunity for an individually crafted study of Judaism based on your personal interests and goals. In this one year programme you can choose from specialty courses in four areas: historiography, Judaism in the Greco-roman period, mysticism and Modernity.
You will study the development of the history of the Jews as a minority group in society, with emphasis on the cultural and social aspects. The programme includes topical debates on the changing identity of a subculture.
Annually new dimensions of Judaism as a religion and culture will be presented, including the relevance of these dimensions for contemporary society and debates.
The study of various other languages and cultures in Leiden has strengthened the study of Judaism and Jewish culture in Leiden by allowing for new disciplines and interdisciplinary methods alongside of the Religious Studies approach. Partnerships with universities from Israel, Germany and the U.S. allow for a constant exchange of knowledge in the form of visiting lecturers in various disciplines.
The programme’s broad approach allows for a group of students from a wide range of educational backgrounds to participate, making for diverse classroom.
