Japanese Studies

The two-year Master’s in Asian Studies specialisation Japanese Studies at Leiden University offers teaching by leading academics and a multi-disciplinary approach to East Asia and the region within this is unique and world-class programme. Leiden University has one of the oldest and most established centres of Japanese Studies in the Western world – building on the country’s long and intimate relations with Japan.

Graduates of the MA Asian Studies specialisation Japanese Studies are qualified to pursue careers where high-level Japanese is a key requirement. Graduates of the programme also demonstrate a well-developed academic understanding of the most pertinent aspects of Japanese Studies – a precursor to future research or academic studies.

This two-year programme has a maximum of 17 places; the Admissions Board ranks the requests on the fulfilment of the entry requirements. The application deadline is 1st April for all students. East Asian Studies, a comparable one-year programme, has no restriction on the number of available places. It is also possible to focus on Japanese Studies within the two-year Research Master’s programme Asian Studies and the one-year East Asian Studies programme.
