This specialisation offers advanced studies in all areas of Italian literature, while the close co-operation between the three co-operating universities (Leiden, Amsterdam and Utrecht) ensures you have access to the broadest range of courses available from such a master’s programme in the Netherlands.
Programme
The flexible specialization in Italian Linguistics helps you to apply and further refine the linguistic research methods and skills acquired during the BA. The Italian-spoken specialisation offers you a number of courses on both Italian and Italian dialects. For this, you study Italian as a language of Europe from a typological, historical and sociolinguistic point of view.
You are free to combine these courses with other courses in the broad MA in Linguistics, or, if your interests lie with the Italian language, you can combine the Italian linguistic courses with courses from the MA in Italian Literature and Culture. This gives you the flexibility to combine papers as well, so as to study, for instance, the language used in literature or the literature in vernacular.
As we have strong ties with the linguistic community, you have a broad choice of original topics for your final thesis, ranging from language acquisition to the sociolinguistics of Italian, to formal syntax, or the phonology and morphology of the language.
You are certain to raise your command of the Italian language to a higher level, as all courses, papers and presentations are in Italian. This includes the MA thesis, which you will write during the second half of the second semester.
