Hebrew and Aramaic Languages and Cultures is taught by Leiden University’s Department of Hebrew and Aramaic, which houses the only Chair of both Hebrew and Aramaic world-wide. In this programme, you have the chance to study Classical Hebrew and the various Aramaic languages through their 3000-year history. While you have the opportunity to take courses in Modern Hebrew language and literature and contemporary Israeli society, you can also explore various Aramaic languages and literatures, including Syriac, Targumic Aramaic and Imperial Aramaic.
Entry requirements
- BA degree or its equivalent in Hebrew and Aramaic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies (with Hebrew), Theology (with a specialisation in Old Testament), Jewish Studies (with Hebrew), or a similar discipline.
- Good reading and translation skills of either Biblical or Modern Hebrew or Aramaic
- Proof of sufficient proficiency in English: IELTS test level of at least 6.5 or TOEFL score of at least 570/230/88-90, evidenced by an appropriate test.
This requirement does not apply if you have:- completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
- an International Baccalaureate, or
- A Dutch VWO-diploma
Students who have a BA in Hebrew and Aramaic Languages and Cultures or Ancient Cultures of the Mediterranean World from Leiden University do not have to apply for admission.
Applicants with a higher professional education (HBO) degree are not eligible for admission.
