Run jointly by Leiden University’s Department of German, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Utrecht, you will be able to take advantage of a broad range of specialised courses on the programme, and will benefit from each university’s specific teaching and research methods. The department’s research is particularly strong in the field of historical linguistics.

Programme

The department offers various specialised courses, including one led by the Chair on a contract funded programme entitled “The Literary Construction of Cultural Identity in Germany after the Wende”. In addition to the cooperation with sister departments in the Netherlands, the programme also has close connections with many German universities—including Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düssseldorf, Universität Leipzig, Westfälische Wilhelmsuniversität Münster, Freie Universität Berlin—which you will be able to use and develop. Research-based co-operation also takes place with the Institute for Cultural German Studies at the Universität Bremen.

Although you will follow the majority of courses at your university of enrolment, you will be required to follow some courses from the three cooperating universities. For more information about the practical consequences of this agreement, please contact the study co-ordinator. Once you have decided upon your area of specialisation you will also be required to follow a number of courses outside your chosen specialisation area—again, you are free to choose courses from those on offer at the cooperating universities. Your Master’s thesis will be completed under the guidance of a supervisor at your university of enrolment.

Sector plan

What does the Sector Plan mean for this programme?

The University of Amsterdam, the VU in Amsterdam, Leiden University and Utrecht University have agreed to combine their strengths.

As students follow part of the master’s programme (at least 10 ects) at one of the partner institutions, this collaboration gives you a much broader range of options. You can compose a programme from the language, literature and cultural modules offered by any of the four universities involved in the partnership.

You can find further details of this Sector Plan in the e-Prospectus
