The department’s research is particularly strong in the field of historical linguistics. Run jointly by Leiden University’s Department of German, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Utrecht, you will be able to take advantage of a broad range of specialised courses on the programme, and will benefit from each university’s specific teaching and research methods.

Entry requirements

  • BA degree in German Language and Culture from one of the four participating universities. Where students with BA degrees from other universities are concerned, the admission board decides on an individual basis.
  • Thorough proficiency in German.
  • Proof of sufficient proficiency in English: IELTS test level of at least 6.5 or TOEFL score of at least 570/230/88-90, evidenced by an appropriate test.
    This requirement does not apply if you have:
    • completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
    • an International Baccalaureate, or
    • a Dutch VWO diploma

Students who have a BA in German Language and Culture from Leiden University do not have to apply for admission.
