The MA specialisation in French Language and Linguistics offers you in-depth courses in a wide array of linguistic topics on theoretical and applied linguistics, including language acquisition, syntax, and semantics. Apart from applying the French language on an academic level – as all courses, papers and presentations are in French – the programme offers language courses for special purposes, such as economic and legal French. You will discuss matters of interest such as, how do language and people influence each other? What is the real function of language? Courses are tailored to your individual needs and interests.

Entry requirements

  • BA degree or its equivalent in French Language and Culture
  • A thorough proficiency in French (CEFR; listening: C1; reading: C1; oral interaction: B2; oral production: B2; writing: B2)
  • Proof of sufficient proficiency in English: IELTS test level of at least 6.5 or TOEFL score of at least 570/230/88-90, evidenced by an appropriate test.
    This requirement does not apply if you have:
    • completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
    • an International Baccalaureate, or
    • a Dutch VWO diploma

Students who have a BA in French Language and Culture from Leiden University do not have to apply for admission.
