The MA in Egyptology covers the linguistic and cultural history of Egypt from the Pharaonic times to Graeco-Roman and Coptic Egypt. Do you have a background in ancient history, Near Eastern studies or archaeology and are you interested in gaining more in-depth knowledge of ancient Egypt?
Or do you have a BA in Egyptology and do you want to pursue your interests and specialise further? Then Leiden’s MA degree in Egyptology is the ideal programme for you.
The programme offers a wide range of approaches and topics to meet your interests. Part of the curriculum takes place in Egypt.
Entry requirements
- BA in the field of Egyptology, Near Eastern Studies, Egyptian or Near Eastern Archeology, with a thorough knowledge of Middle Egyptian
- BA related to the field, preferably in (Ancient) History, Classics, or Archaelogy or an equivalent degree. Holders of a BA in a related field will follow a slightly different programme from those with a degree in Egyptology.
- Proof of sufficient proficiency in English: IELTS test level of at least 6.5 or TOEFL score of at least 570/230/88-90, evidenced by an appropriate test.
This requirement does not apply if you have:- completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
- an International Baccalaureate, or
- a Dutch VWO-diploma
Students who have a BA in Egyptian Language and Culture or Ancient Cultures of the Mediterranean World from Leiden University do not have to apply for admission.
Applicants with a higher professional education (HBO) degree are not eligible for admission.
