Standard Dutch originated in the Golden Age, when in 1637 the first official Bible translation came to light. Dutch is currently spoken by almost 23 million people – 16 million in the Netherlands and 7 million in Flanders – and occupies 30th place in the list of languages (some 6,000 in all) that are spoken around the world. It is evidently by no means an insignificant language.
When Dutch is your mother tongue, please refer to the information about the MA Nederlandse taal en cultuur .
