Besides the Greek and Latin languages, the range of subjects you can study in the MA in Classics includes studies on Ancient History, Ancient Philosophy, Papyrology and Neo- Latin. The academic staff responsible for these courses are internationally renowned for their research work. The result is a master’s programme which provides you with a comprehensive view of the classical world, while defining the significance it still has for modern society.
This programme qualifies you for the Teacher-training programme in Classics.

Research/PhD

If you wish to pursue an academic career, a PhD track is the next step. Anyone with a master’s degree can in principle apply for a PhD track. However, students with a particular interest in an academic career are advised to choose a research master’s programme, for example the Classics specialisation, as part of the Research Master’s in Classics and Ancient Civilisations, since these programmes prepare candidates directly for research at PhD level.

The central component of the individual PhD track consists of carrying out a research project under expert supervision, and writing a dissertation reporting on this research. PhD students are directly associated with a research institute. In addition, they follow a number of courses, some of which are offered by the relevant national research school.

Classics has its own national research school, OIKOS, that organises a number of courses for PhD students in the area of Graeco-Roman Antiquity. OIKOS stimulates and co-ordinates research efforts in the same area, and promotes the formation of an international network of researchers. The procedure for admission to the PhD track is conducted through job applications.
