This two-year specialisation in Chinese Studies combines content courses with intensive and advanced language training. You will be taught by internationally recognised experts in fields ranging from political science to literature and religion, as well as experienced teachers of Chinese as a foreign language.
The programme will equip you with an excellent command of Mandarin (and – in the case of certain specialisations – of Classical Chinese), a broad knowledge of China, insight into its internal and external dynamics, and starting points for contextualising China within Asia. An important part of your training and education you will get from your one year stay at a prominent Chinese university.
In addition, the programme utilises the resources of the world-renowned Leiden sinological library, one of the largest and most diverse collection in Europe and an important reference point for scholars from around the world.
Entry requirements
- A university level BA degree or its equivalent, with a relevant regional or disciplinary specialisation.
- A command of Mandarin equivalent of at least:
- HSK New Style Level 4 for the MA programme with first-year courses in situ
- HSK New Style Level 5 for the MA programme with exemption from the first-year courses in situ
For holders of the old style HSK certificate, Level 7 is the minimum requirement. Certain specialisations require a knowledge of Classical Chinese that is sufficient for the successful completion of graduate studies.
- Thorough profiency in English: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 570 / 230 / 88-90 evidenced by an appropriate test.
This requirement does not apply if you have:- completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
- an International Baccalaureate, or
- a Dutch VWO-diploma
Students who have a BA in Chinese Studies from Leiden University do not have to apply for admission.
HBO
Applicants with a higher professional education (HBO) degree are not eligible for admission.
