The Biblical Studies specialisation of the Master’s Programme in Religious Studies offers a unique opportunity to study the Bible (Hebrew Bible and New Testament) in its historical, material and literary context. A core programme focusing on key documents, a flexible programme of individual choice and the master’s thesis supplement one another and make sure that every student receives the best benefit from the many resources Leiden University can offer.
Entry requirements
- BA in Theology or World Religions from Leiden University or equivalent BA degree (Religiestudies, Godsdienstwetenschap) from a recognised university.
- BA degree from another relevant discipline (Arts, Social Sciences of History) on the condition that they are able to show their knowledge of the field of specialisation is sufficient. In some cases knowledge of the original language of a religion is required.
- Students are also expected to meet the admission criteria specific to their chosen specialisation. These can be found at the programme descriptions of the specialisations.
- Proof of sufficient proficiency in English: IELTS test level of at least 6.5 or TOEFL score of at least 570/230/88-90, evidenced by an appropriate test.
This requirement does not apply if you have:- completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
- an International Baccalaureate
- a Dutch VWO-diploma
Students who have a BA in Theology from Leiden University do not have to apply for admission.
Pre-master’s
Students with a bachelor’s degree from a university of professional education (HBO) or a MA degree in another field of study, should contact the study coordinator for information on the possibility of a one-year bridge programme.
