The Research Master’s Programme in Archaeology focuses on the research areas that are strongly represented in Leiden. The heart of the programme is organised around the excellent research with which Leiden has made a name for itself internationally. The research master’s is an advanced two-year postgraduate programme. It distinguishes itself from the regular master of arts courses in that it engages the student in top quality interdisciplinary research and emphasises the acquisition of research skills. Methodological, theoretical and scientific-philosophical aspects will be highlighted within the general, communal part of the research master’s programme.

Research/PhD

A few master’s students can become eligible for a research master’s programme in preparation for a possible PhD research position. Strict selection criteria apply here. Apart from carrying out their own research, PhD students are expected to follow the education programme of a research school such as the Research School Websifor Archaeology (ARCHON) or CNWS. They also have modest teaching obligations, such as being in charge of a seminar based on their own research project.

The research master’s programme in Archaeology focuses on the research areas that are strongly represented in Leiden. The heart of the programme is organised around the excellent research with which Leiden has made a name for itself internationally.

There are four different tracks, centred on four research projects that reflect the broad spectrum of research undertaken within the department:

The programme distinguishes itself from the regular Master of Arts courses in that it engages the student in top quality interdisciplinary research and emphasises the acquisition of research skills. Methodological, theoretical and scientific-philosophical aspects will be highlighted within the general, communal part of the Research Master programme.

Within the specialisations, courses are aimed at the intensification and broadening of the knowledge base and the development of research and publication skills. Research Master students are stimulated to visit international conferences, contribute to international workshops within the department and abroad, and to take courses outside the department at related (international) institutions.

PhD candidate

Sjoerd van der Linde

“I regularly have the opportunity to go to international conferences and universities for my research, and can also count on qualified supervision.”

“When I was a BA student in Leiden, faculty staff encouraged and supported me to include courses of other disciplines and universities so that I could specialise abroad in the field of heritage management. Now several years later, I decided to return to Leiden to undertake a PhD and found that this stimulating and international environment, combined with a high quality of research, is still very much alive.

My research deals with archaeological heritage management in the developing world, and is part of a European Union project with over 10 international partners. I regularly have the opportunity to go to international conferences and universities for my research, but can also count on a combination of qualified supervision and stimulating graduate schools. My research is part of the newly developed field of International Archaeological Heritage Management, an area that is gaining more impetus in Leiden and that can build on the scale, tradition and experience of all the international work that is undertaken. To be part of this and to work and study closely with students and staff from many different backgrounds both in Leiden and abroad is simply fantastic.”
