Archaeology of the Roman Provinces, Middle Ages and Modern Period is a one-year MA-specialisation at the internationally renowned Archaeology Faculty of Leiden University. The programme focuses on the Roman conquest of Europe and its impact on the development of our modern-day society.

Choose Archaeology of the Roman Provinces, Middle Ages and Modern Period at Leiden University:

  • Gain in-depth knowledge about the extent of the Roman Empire’s influence on modern-day Europe. Roads and harbours were created, towns emerged, luxury villas were built, frontiers were fortified with a large number of fortresses. After the collapse of the Roman state, the foundations for Europe were laid during Middle Ages and the Modern Period.
  • Investigate major processes such as religious transformation (Christianisation), urbanisation, social differentiation and the rise of the market economy.
  • Get a thorough understanding of the transformation from the ‘Dark Ages’ to the Industrial Revolution, with a special focus on economy and urbanisation.
  • Engage in a period of (international) fieldwork, or opt for an internship in a museum or an (international) institution. This will provide you with valuable practical experience and it will expand your network.
  • Get acquainted with aspects of a variety of disciplines, including history, anthropology, art history, linguistics and sciences in this interdisciplinary programme.
  • Study at a faculty that ranks in the top ten worldwide in academic reputation and research impact (March 2017 QS World University Ranking by subject).
