24 October 2014 — Leiden University is in highest position of all the Dutch Universities in the Times Higher Education Ranking (THE). Leiden climbed from 79th position to 64th place, overtaking Utrecht University. The THE World University Ranking presents the world’s top 200 universities on the basis of thirteen indicators. Among the Dutch universities, Leiden is followed by Utrecht University (67) and Wageningen University (70). The 2012-2013 world ranking is headed by the California Institute of Technology, followed by the University of Oxford and Stanford University in joint second place.
Like last year, the Netherlands has performed well in this latest ranking, and is the third ‘knowledge country’ after the United States and the UK. There are 7 Dutch universities in the top 100 and 12 in the top 200. All the Dutch universities have risen in the rankings in comparison with last year.
The THE assesses the institutions on the basis of 13 indicators in the areas of teaching, research and innovation.
