Pre-Sessional English Course for Law Students

14 January 2016 — Applicants who apply for Leiden Law School’s English-taught LL.M. programmes, LL.M. Advanced Studies programmes or MSc programme may benefit from attending the pre-sessional English classes offered by Leiden Law School and the University Academic Language Centre.

Students who do not meet the required language level for (Adv.) LLM or MSc programmes (i.e. IELTS 7.0 with minimum band scores or IELTS 6.0 / Toefl 100 with minimum band scores of TOEFL 20) may be offered the opportunity to bring their English up to the required entry level by attending a 4-week intensive presessional English course.

The course is specifically designed to fast track applicants who have an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (Toefl 90) to the required English level.

Applicants with a sufficient overall English test result, but one or more slightly insufficient band scores, i.e. IELTS 5.5 (Toefl 17), may be instructed, as part of their conditional offer, to participate in the one-month presessional English course.

Important notes:

  • Applicants with one or more band score below IELTS 5.5 (Toefl 17) are not eligible for a place on the presessional English course, irrespective of their overall English test result.
  • Applicants cannot apply directly for a place on the presessional course. Instead places are awarded at the discretion of the programme admission board upon receipt of the complete application dossier. Places cannot be guaranteed to all applicants who meet the above-mentioned English language criteria due to capacity limitations.
  • The presessional course only takes place in the summer i.e. for students commencing their studies in September. There is no presessional course available for students commencing their studies in February.

The presessional English course consists of five half days per week of intensive English classes, under the instruction of experienced teachers at Leiden University Language Centre. Students are also expected to undertake a significant amount of self-study, prepare assignments and take frequent tests to assess their progress.

Start date of the pre-sessional course:

  • Monday 31 July till Friday 25 August 2017

The course will be completed in time for students to participate in the orientation week for international students, which takes place just before the start of the academic year.
