14 January 2016 — Applicants who apply for Leiden Law School’s English-taught LL.M. programmes, LL.M. Advanced Studies programmes or MSc programme may benefit from attending the pre-sessional English classes offered by Leiden Law School and the University Academic Language Centre.
Students who do not meet the required language level for (Adv.) LLM or MSc programmes (i.e. IELTS 7.0 with minimum band scores or IELTS 6.0 / Toefl 100 with minimum band scores of TOEFL 20) may be offered the opportunity to bring their English up to the required entry level by attending a 4-week intensive presessional English course.
The course is specifically designed to fast track applicants who have an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (Toefl 90) to the required English level.
Applicants with a sufficient overall English test result, but one or more slightly insufficient band scores, i.e. IELTS 5.5 (Toefl 17), may be instructed, as part of their conditional offer, to participate in the one-month presessional English course.
The presessional English course consists of five half days per week of intensive English classes, under the instruction of experienced teachers at Leiden University Language Centre. Students are also expected to undertake a significant amount of self-study, prepare assignments and take frequent tests to assess their progress.
The course will be completed in time for students to participate in the orientation week for international students, which takes place just before the start of the academic year.
For the pre-sessional English course there is an additional fee on top of the standard tuition fee for your degree programme. Additional reading materials must also be purchased.
The following books must be purchased in advance of the course:
Applicants who already meet the required English language test score can also benefit from attending the pre-sessional course on a voluntary basis. If you are interested in attending this courses please send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you prefer not to take pre-sessional English classes
If you receive an offer of admission to an extended (Adv) LLM or MSc programme with pre-sessional English classes, but you prefer not to take pre-sessional classes, please let your programme coordinator and the Admissions Office know as soon as possible. You must then re-take your IELTS or Toefl test and submit a sufficient score (IELTS 7.0 with minimum band scores or IELTS 6.0 / Toefl 100 with minimum band scores of TOEFL 20) if you wish to be eligible to join the study programme. Your sufficient English score must be received by the Admissions Office before the start date of the study programme, or before the visa/residence permit deadline if applicable.
You can request student accommodation for the duration of your pre-sessional English course and Master’s studies. See the Student Housing website for more information.
Additional introduction and social activities are arranged for all law students attending presessional English courses. This provides you with a great opportunity to get to know your fellow international law students and the city of Leiden before you start your Master’s degree.
In previous years a two-month presessional English course was available for students with an overall English score of IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80. This course has been discontinued as of the academic year 2017-2018.
