Platinum makes nitrite harmless, an alternative to sewage treatment plants?

For the first time a catalyst is found that breaks down nitrite to pure nitrogen at a room temperature. PhD student Matteo Duca of the Leiden Institute of Chemistry discovered this effect on a special type of platinum surface. Platinum nanoparticles may be able to make mass production possible.
