‘Darwin in Leiden’ by Rinny E. Kooi now published in English

About the footprint Darwin left, although he never actualy went to Leiden.

Almost discarded

A few years ago, biologist Rinny E. Kooi walked through a hallway filled with a number of old portraits, ready to be discarded by someone who was leaving Leiden University. One was an original photograph of Charles Darwin, by Oscar Gustav Rejlander, dated June 24, 1874. Later, Kooi discovered that Pieter Harting, professor at Utrecht University who received an honorary doctorate in Leiden, had asked Darwin for a portrait and that Darwin had sent two. Probably Harting was composing a photo album, a customary gift in those days, just like the liber amicorum is now. It is also likely that the portrait of Darwin is one of the two he had sent himself.
