Tuition fees

Tuition fees on this website are per year and subject to annual change.
See programme description for exact fees. All fees mentioned in the programme descriptions are full-time rates.

Home fee for Dutch and EU/EEA/Swiss/Surinamese students

Due to EU regulations, students from the EU (European Union) and EEA (European Economic Area) are entitled to pay the same tuition fees as Dutch students (=home fee). Home fee only applies to those programmes which have been approved for government funding by the Dutch Ministry of Education, and only to EU/EEA and Swiss students. Different fees apply to non-EU students and to programmes which are not government funded. Please see programme descriptions for exact fees.

2009-2010 full-time home fees

  • Statutory tuition fees for students aged under 30*: € 1620
  • Institutional fee for students aged 30* and over: € 2220

Statutory tuition fees

The Dutch Ministry of Education regulates the tuition fees for Dutch students under the age of 30 for all programmes which have been approved for government funding. Under Dutch law the age of the student on September 1 (start of the academic year) determines the fee to be paid by the student for that academic year. A student who reaches the age of 30 on September 1, 2008 is required to pay the amount of € 2150 for the academic year 2008/2009.

Fees for international students who are not from the EU/EEA, Switzerland or Surinam

The tuition fees for non-EU/EEA/Swiss students are determined each year by Leiden University. Fees may vary from programme to programme, and are given in the programme descriptions. All fees given are full-time fees.

A note on part-time study
As full-time study is a requirement for obtaining an MVV or a residence permit for the purpose of study, international students who are not from the EU/EEA or Switzerland are usually not allowed to study part-time. Please contact the International Office for information on part-time tuition fees if you are interested in part-time study and are a non-EU student but have been granted residency on another ground than study.

Method of Payment

All International Students who have been accepted for a master’s degree programme will receive an Acceptance Letter and detailed information on how to pay the tuition fees well before the start of the programme.

All students who are admitted to any of the non-government funded programmes (International Relations and Diplomacy or one of the Master of Advanced Legal Studies Programmes) should observe the payment details as mentioned below under Other International Programmes.

Dutch Students

Students who both have Dutch Nationality and who have been admitted on the basis of a Dutch diploma are referred to the information on the website in Dutch Masters in Leiden.

Other EU/EEA and Swiss students

EU/EEA and Swiss students who have been admitted to a government-funded “home-fee” programme, can choose to pay before or after arrival:

  • Before arrival, via international bank transfer to ICS Student Administration, Leiden University. Details to be added.
Please note that all bank charges (relating to the transfer of money to Leiden University) are to be paid by the applicant.

  • EU/EEA and Swiss students can also choose to arrange payment (and registration) directly with the Leiden University Student Administration, provided that they have a Dutch bank account (no savings account). Home-fee paying EU/EEA and Swiss students can authorise the Leiden University Student Administration to withdraw the fees from his or her account in eight instalments. This is done by signing a standing order form which can be obtained from the student administration after arrival.

Other International Students

International students who are not from one of the EU/EEA countries or from Switzerland, should pay the full tuition fees before arrival or enter into an instalment agreement with the International Office.

Payment in full before arrival

Fees can be paid by credit card (Master Card, American Express or Visa) or by international bank transfer to:
ABN AMRO Bank in Amsterdam SWIFT-code: ABNANL2A
International Bank Account Reference Code: NL59ABNA0552828785

Therefore the applicant should instruct his/her Bank to transfer the relevant amount to the International Office account, ensuring that the payment of all charges for the transfer will be paid from his/her account. (i.e. the amount to be transferred should be the amount of the tuition fee, plus all applicable bank charges)
If you are paying for someone else, please state clearly on your transfer form the name of the applicant and the programme.
